North Korea's Artillery Firing Drill Raises Tensions

Kim Jong Un overseeing artillery firing drill

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un led an artillery firing drill by the Korean People's Army, the country's military force, near the border within firing range of Seoul, the South Korean capital, as reported by state media KCNA. The drill, conducted on Thursday, was seen as fulfilling important military missions for war deterrence.

In response, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated that North Korea test-fired multiple rocket launcher shells and self-propelled artillery shells into the Yellow Sea during the same timeframe. The JCS closely monitored North Korea's activities as joint military drills with the US, known as the Freedom Shield exercises, took place. These drills included twice the number of troops compared to the previous year.

Additionally, North Korea attempted to jam GPS signals near the border in South Korea multiple times since Tuesday, the JCS reported, although no damage occurred. The State Department in Washington described the joint US-South Korean drills as routine and defensive, urging North Korea to refrain from further provocative actions and return to diplomacy.

During the artillery drill, Kim emphasized the need to enhance combat readiness and war capability, instructing the military to be prepared for swift and merciless strikes in an actual war scenario. KCNA published photographs of artillery fire with Kim in a black leather jacket overseeing the exercise alongside soldiers.

Seoul's defense minister visited the Capital Defense Command and ordered a firm response to any provocations from North Korea aimed at the capital. Earlier in the week, North Korean state media reported that Kim inspected field training at a major military operations base in the western region of the country.

Overall, the recent military activities and drills indicate heightened tensions in the region, with North Korea showcasing its war-readiness while South Korea and the US continue joint exercises. The situation remains volatile, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
